Abstract

Aim of this study is to identify the status of etude analysis method in the application process, which is believed to have positive effects on cello education. With this in mind, student were provided with the etude analysis which was practiced before and their opinions were obtained. Being in a qualitative pattern, the study is qualified as descriptive and based on situation determination, where content analysis method was utilized as a qualitative research method. The study group consisted of 12 sophomore, junior, and senior year undergraduate cello students -out of 14 in total-, studying at Gazi University Faculty of Education Department of Fine Arts Education Division of Music Education. The students were given the assignment of the 1st and 13th etudes from Sebastian Lee Op.31 etude book, whose analyses had been conducted before. In the following course hour, the previously analyzed etudes were explained to the students in detail. The students were asked for their opinions about the first week which was allocated for the assignment prior to the analyses, and about the second course where these analyses were explained in detail. Their opinions were interpreted in themes and codes formed through content analysis method, which is a qualitative research method. The students were named as Ö1, Ö2, Ö3,…..Ö12. At the end of the study, it was revealed that the etude whose analysis was carried out before created an awareness and consciousness in the etude practice, eased the process, and saved time. Besides, the general music education received by the students on etude analysis was found insufficient.
