Abstract

Communication is a phenomenon necessary for an individual to maintain his/her existence and maintain the continuity of a society and meet his/her needs in any sense. Mass communication was stepped into as various technologic tools developed within the historical process improved face-to-face communication as well as technology-mediated communication styles. Mobile phones, among the leading mass communication tools, play a very important part nowadays. Having become among the indispensable elements of human life rapidly, smart phones have started to reach levels that can be regarded as addiction over time, which cannot be got rid of easily, just like alcohol, cigarette and narcotic substances. This addiction may cause many negative effects on the body functions or mental structures, especially in the young generation. The aim of this study is to determine whether smart phone addiction, among the sub-stages of technology addiction, varies by different variables on university students. The study group of the research consists of 200 students at bachelor’s 1st-grade level maintaining their studies in Burdur province MAKU Faculty of Education in the 2016-2017 academic year. SPSS-22 statistical package program was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the statistical analysis conducted, a significant difference was found in the smart phone addiction of students by the variable of academic achievement. However, it was determined that there was no significant difference by the variables of gender, age, department, average monthly income of the family, average monthly expenditure, the price of the smart phone used, average monthly telephone expenditure, and free-time activities
